Traits of a Healthy Team Ministry

Workshop Leader: Dr. Paul Schoepp

What are the practices that lead to healthy team ministry in congregations? Come with your ministry partner (or come alone) to discover ways to strengthen the serving that you do together. The time spent will be a mix of presentation and participation that will provide some tools to take home for further implementation.

The Canadian Lutheran Landscape in 2010 and Beyond

Workshop Leader: Rev. Don Schiemann

Lutheranism in Canada is at a crossroads. Some in the ELCiC are lamenting a capitulation to revisionist theology in their church. Driven by the movement to approve the ordination of practicing homosexuals and the blessing of same sex unions, a revisionist hermeneutic and theology is creating an even larger rift between Lutherans than has previously existed. What is the future for confessional Lutheranism in Canada? What role will LCC play in bringing a confessional voice and a clear Law and Gospel proclamation to an increasingly secular society?

What Makes One a Confessional Lutheran?

Workshop Leader: Dr. Ed Kettner

We confess the Scriptures to be the Word of God written, and the Lutheran Confessions to be a true and unadulterated exposition and exhibition of the Word. Recent events show that many who go by the name “Lutheran” do not in fact hold to this understanding. What, then, are the parameters within which one must fall to truly be considered “confessional”?

The Anxious Congregation and the Responsible Congregation (PART 1 & 2)

Workshop Leader: Rev. Dave Hilderman & Rev. John Haycock

Have you ever been puzzled by negative or even threatening or divisive emotional reactions in the congregation when something new or surprising is introduced? How does this happen? How does one control one’s own emotional reactions like being defensive or taking things personally in the face of complaints or grumbling? How does a leader deal with sabotage? (Do you ever sympathize with Moses leading the Hebrews in the wilderness?) Come and join Rev. David Hilderman and Rev. John Haycock to view and discuss a 2 part DVD from Healthy Congregations entitled the Anxious Congregation and the Responsible Congregation. It will give you a different perspective on emotional process in the congregation.

The Organic Church: Real Fruit or Simply Going Rogue?

Workshop Leader: Rev. David Dressler

Neil Cole’s bestselling book, Organic Church: Growing Faith Where Life Happens, challenges us to reexamine our answer to the question: “What is church?” Should Cole’s book reshape the way we think of and do outreach and ministry in our Canadian context? In this workshop, four LCC church workers will help us evaluate Cole’s Organic Church from a theological and missiological perspective. People who sign up for this workshop are encouraged to read Coles’ book, Organic Church prior to the conference. Organic Church is available through Chapters/Indigo or Amazon. Participants in this workshop will also receive three or four “book reviews” in advance of the church worker conference which will also serve as a basis for group discussion.

Lutheran Chaplains at Death’s Door

Workshop Leaders: Rev. Rod Buck & Rev. Sye Van Maanen (Armed Forces Chaplains) and Rev. Bill Ney (RCMP Chaplain)

Three experienced chaplains will explore the resources we have as Lutherans involved in emergency services or military chaplaincy when we are called upon to do death notification to next of kin. What immediate things should we be aware as we share the news of the death of a loved one? How do we apply Law and Gospel in order to bring hope and comfort at this fragile and tender moment? What are some short-term and long-term concerns of which we need to be aware?

DPS Ministry in LCC: The First Twenty Years

Workshop Leader: Dr. Paul Schoepp

2010 marks the 20th Anniversary of the inception of DPS ministry in Lutheran Church Canada (LCC). In this workshop Dr. Schoepp will share early results and invite feedback from research he is currently conducting (“The Emergence of Director of Parish Services (DPS) ministry within Lutheran Church Canada: Encouragements, Impediments, and Detours in the DPS Career Path”). Have a listen, share your reflections, and envision how DPS ministry could develop over the next two decades.

How It Came to This

Workshop Leader: Dr. Jonathan Strand

Both the new militant atheism and radically heretical theologies are based upon fundamental assumptions derived from modern philosophy. These assumptions are becoming more and more widely accepted. Unless we understand them we will not know how to respond to these anti-Christian points of view. The story of the development of these ideas will be told, as well as how they are (amazingly easily) refuted.

The Christian & Finances – An Introduction to Biblical Principles for Money Management

Workshop Leader: Brian Wonnick

Background: Becoming more evident in 2008, huge financial instability has greatly challenged our money management skills, raising some of the following questions:

  • What did we see & what did we learn from this recent economic downturn?
  • How do we seize the opportunity to increase financial literacy amongst God’s people?
  • In order to spread the Gospel, what can congregations do to foster and increase financial support in the short and long term? What must we do, to ensure that our children, & grandchildren continue to support the spreading of the Gospel?
  • Where do our young people and young adults, for example, receive training about cash flow management in the context of Biblical stewardship?
  • What’s involved in Christian Estate Planning?

Covered in the Presentation”

  1. Who are we?
  2. Why we came together?
  3. A review of the “core” resource and other such resources.
  4. What’s your income? And, what do you spend? An exercise to be completed in advance & discussed at this session.
  5. Resource table provided, as well as a list of websites to be made available.
  6. Next steps for you – a discussion & plan for how you will start this process in your congregation or organization.

Tools and Strategies for Developing Biblical Literacy

Facilitators: Rev. Vic Morris & DPS Michael Schutz, Jon Teschke, Belinda Johnson

“From infancy you have known the holy scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.” (2 Tim. 3:15) That may have been true for Timothy, but how true is it for people today? Sadly, Biblical illiteracy is rampant. How can we get our people into the word so that they can give an account of the hope they have? This workshop provides tools and strategies for encouraging and enhancing Biblical literacy.

When P.K.’s are M.I.A

Workshop Leader: Rev. Don Schiemann

The children of church workers are not immune to the temptations of the evil one. How does a church worker handle it when one or more of his children walks away from the Christian faith? How do we deal with the passage in Scripture which states, “If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?” (1 Tim. 3:5) How do we move from hurt, pain, guilt and grief to hope?

The Ordination of Women into the Pastoral Office in the Evangelical-Lutheran Church –
A Biblical and Confessional Practice?

Workshop Leader: Dr. John Maxfield

Originally prepared for a conference entitled “Toward a Confessional Lutheran Network in Canada,” which included participants from the LCC and from congregations leaving or considering a departure from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, the presentation addresses the practice of women serving in the pastoral office from the perspective of confessional Lutherans throughout the world who believe that this practice is contrary to God’s Word and a Lutheran understanding of the pastoral office as instituted by Jesus and ordered by the New Testament.

Evangelizing ‘Ignostics’

Workshop Leader: Dr. Glenn Schaeffer

George Hunter defines “ignostics” as those people who have no Christian “memory”. Canada is becoming a country of “ignostics.” How do church workers share the gospel with “ignostics”? How might our congregations connect with “ignostics” with the goal of sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ? Dr. Glenn Schaeffer, Executive Assistant – Outreach, will explore some of the answers to these questions in this workshop.

Learning from the Ancients: Archaeology and Faith

Workshop Leader: Dr. Stephen Chambers

Our Edmonton seminary has participated for 3 seasons in a dig at Hippos, Israel. The dig focuses on one of that city’s church-complexes, which thrived from the 4th to the 8th century. It included a worship centre, a monastic community, a pilgrimage site, and other fascinating features as well. This workshop’s aim is to share with you these finds and their significance, both for understanding ancient Christianity and for reflecting on our church-life today.
