Convention

Pastors of congregations or parishes of the Alberta-British Columbia District will automatically be considered voting delegates. In a congregation with a pastoral team ministry, only one of the pastors shall be designated as the voting pastoral delegate.

Each parish is to elect one Lay Delegate and one Alternate Lay Delegate who is not on the Clergy or Deacon Roster of the Synod. Lay ministers and teachers who have not been entered on the Synodical Roster are eligible to be a voting delegate. Retired pastors and those holding Candidate status are not eligible. While pastor’s wives are technically eligible, we would encourage congregations to be certain that the lay delegate vote is not merely a duplication of the clergy vote of the congregation. Any questions about voting eligibility may be directed to the President’s Office.

Every congregation in the District is assessed an amount to cover the cost of the convention. Included in the cost is the travel, accommodation and meals of pastoral and lay delegates.

All church workers who are on the Deacon roster of Lutheran Church-Canada in our District may attend as advisory delegates. An advisory delegate may speak on the convention floor but does not have voting rights.

We are limited in our ability to cover costs. For this Convention, the District Board of Directors has decided that in the general congregational assessment, it can afford to cover the cost of one deacon per congregation. So a congregation may have several deacons because it has a Lutheran School with several rostered teachers. The congregation may designate only one of those deacons to be eligible to have his or her costs reimbursed by the District. All others from that congregation, should they wish to come, would need to have the congregation cover their costs or else cover the costs themselves.
